Pretty Tough

Who What Wear featured this combat-chic street style pic by Vanessa Jackman the other day and it totally inspired us to mix two of our favorite – and most opposing – styles. The tried and true military jacket looks unexpectedly lovely when paired with romantic white lace and flirty florals.

Little Leather Jacket (LLJ)

Where do I begin? White dress, neon Nikes, leather biker jacket and a Chanel purse. So many opposing pieces that somehow magically connect to make a perfectly harmonious and unexpectedly chic look. What I think brings it all together though, is the leather jacket. If they were proper for women during Coco Chanel’s fashion reign, I believe she would have put it in the same category as the black dress. For the modern woman, a leather jacket is functional, sexy and adds the right amount of tough to feminine looks or makes your off duty style that much cooler. It’s definitely an investment piece, but one that will go a long way for many years to come. Our pick? Rag and Bone‘s Bowery Leather Jacket. It’s kind of to Rag and Bone what the trench is to Burberry. Iconic.

LBF – Little Black Fur

Those of you born in the 70s and 80s are probably in possession of your grandmother’s fur stole or jacket. Most of these vintage beauties even have her initials delicately embroidered in the interior silk lining. It’s such a lovely touch and a reminder of the fabulous and feminine fashion staples of the “olden days”, when hats, hose and furs were as prevalent in granny’s wardrobe as denim and flats are in ours.  But fur is making a major comeback and a new wave of designers are integrating it into their collections and approaching this luxe piece as more of a wear with all winter staple. On the streets, we’re seeing models off duty pairing chic fur jackets and vests with denim and leather leggings for a fresh and WARM day look.

The Leather Power Suit

For all the downtown cool looks that black leather is associated with, we love talking this style uptown and showing the sophisticated side of leather. By Malene Birger’s super chic leather pencil skirt can seamlessly take you from the boardroom to post work cocktails. Pair with a black menswear inspired jacket a la Kate Lanphear (via Vanessa Jackman’s Streetstyle Blog) for a lady killer look or for a less bold route, finish off with an elegant silk blouse, preferably from Equipment.
