I just spent an enchanting weekend on Cumberland Island – the southern most barrier island on the Georgia coast. Most people know it from that iconic wedding photograph of Carolyn Bassette (in that ethereal Narciso gown) and JFK Jr. Only 300 people are allowed on the island each day and the only accommodations are a campsite by the sea and a century old inn that used to be the home of a Carnegie descendant (and is still run by that family). By day we rode beach cruisers through canopies of Spanish moss draped oaks, chased wild horses, laid out topless on a desolate beach, explored the beautifully decayed, ivy soaked ruins of a Gilded Age mansion and sipped cold whiskey cocktails while gently swinging on a porch swing the size of a twin bed. Come evening, we played chess in the stately drawing room of a 100 year old inn and then dressed for a candle lit farm to table dinner with strangers who quickly became friends. And slept like we’d been clubbed. I’m so excited for the upcoming fall season and all it’s leather furred fabulousness, but it was so sweet to enjoy a true moment of summer before the madness begins!
