Suit Yourself in Alex & Eli

look2look8

When did all the Bright Young Things abandon the suit? Tailored blazers and sleek pencil skirts get lots of love, but they are often styled separately with boyfriend jeans and a burn out tee. Gone are the days of the power suit - when the bigger the shoulder meant the bolder the woman. As office dress codes have simmered and stylish women have proven that they can be just as productive as their male counterparts sans the restrictive attire; the suit has quietly moved to the back of the closet. Or so we thought…

Enter Aja and Anna, two recent Parsons grads who recognized the lack of sophisticated suiting in the advanced contemporary market and had the spot on vision and talent to give it a major comeback. ALEX & ELI, their genius label, is suiting for women who don’t wear suits. Their chic pieces are constructed with clever details and have just enough masculine touches to give you a total power trip. Best of all, the pieces are just as stunning worn separately as together…say with boyfriend jeans or a burn out tee.

Madeliene Thompson

When walking into one of our first showroom appointments to view a few lines we knew we wanted to carry on our site, we came across a special (and wonderfully oh-so-soft) surprise…I can’t resist… it was a CASHMERICAL.

Madeleine Thompson.

Madeleine is known for her jewelery line but she has branched out into knitwear and cashmere. Her collection includes a chic button-less cardigan, a wrap around shawl, and a thick chunky knit scarf AND fabulous cashmere dresses absolutely no girl will want to take off all winter long!!!

Inspired by her birthplace, Hong Kong, and her formative years spent in England, she blends her love for eastern tradition with a cool western eye.

Thank you Madeleine!

jenni21

Jenni Kayne recently said in Harper’s Bazaar “I like clothes that you can throw down on the floor and still be able to wear”.

Me too!!  I also love clothes that are easy to pull on (and off) and can work day-to-night in a flash. That is after all why we started Les Nouvelles.

Jenni is a perfect addition and has mastered the art of ageless collections and wearability since launching in 2003.  She has already won over the likes of Rachel Bilson, The Olsens, Selma Blair and other young Hollywood starlets along with national editors and is now considered a “true great American designer”.  Her pieces are easy and beautiful taking the classic American design to modern, simply styled  must-haves.  Feathers and sequins in the day, white for winter, and fur anytime are the Jenni Kayne mentality. Timeless, yet so of the moment.

We cannot wait to have her in our closet!!

For more insider news on Jenni Kayne read up on Nylon Mag’s Q&A.

Jewelry for the Jet Set

Jill Golden jets from her home base of New York to exotic locales around the world seeking inspiration for her stunning jewelry collection, Flutter. She soaks in the vibrant colors and cultures of destinations such Capri, Buenos Aires and Mallorca and translates her experiences into beautiful, statement making jewelry. For Fall, the Barcelona collection evokes Gaudi’s colorful mosaics while the Greece series has hints of classical architecture.

Every major fashion publication from Harper’s Bazaar to ELLE has featured her lovely pieces, and we’re beyond thrilled to be stocking Jill’s whimsical designs on Les Nouvelles! NY Mag’s blog, the Cut just featured several of the pieces we’ll be carrying.

So if you can’t jet off to Marrakech or Mykonos, satisfy your wanderlust with a little adornment from Flutter by Jill Golden!

…three former ELLE editors, the designers behind AKA approach fashion with a unique point of view. After years of identifying the trends and filtering them into themes and categories for fashion hungry women to digest and emulate, the girls of AKA turned their keen eyes to fashion design. They have their pulse on exactly what women want and have a knack for translating the most promising trends into lovely, wearable and accessible clothing. For fall, we are swooning over their nautical inspired tops like the one featured in the July issue of Marie Claire.

Everyday Staple

BINGO! Lynne Hiriak wins for creating and developing a line dedicated to one of the key elements in every woman’s closet … the CARDIGAN. Having worked as a design consultant for Thakoon, Derek Lam, and Lela Rose, Hiriak set out to create cozy knits and cardigans with just-right prices. Cardigans are always comfortable and more importantly they are worn season to season which we love. In this Sunday’s New York Times Style section Bill Cunningham reported on this fashion fav as “fashions future” and we definitely think designer Hiriak knows best:

delphine-32The CARDIGAN is a subconscious essential in every woman’s wardrobe. Its utility is limitless. It’s the item you take on the plane, throw in a bag or keep on the back of (your) office chair. A cardigan can change an outfit in an instant, dress you up or dress you down, and most of all keeps you warm. It can be worn as a sweater, a jacket, suiting, or outerwear. There’s the everyday staple, the beat up favorite and the one we wish we could replicate or buy instantaneously in every color. Cardigans are timeless and sentimental. We all have a bunch in our closets that have been there for years – holes and all – because we just can’t give them up. They’re reliable, cozy and help us hang onto our best memories. AND, we can always justify the need for another.

True story!!

April in Paris

Brice Partouche

April 77 Designer Brian Partouche

ELLE recently profiled Brice Partouche, the designer for April 77 - a line that we are really freaking excited to stock! Check out the Q&A.

For our launch, we went on the hunt for denim that was not yet saturated in the market or over hyped in the celebrity rags because Nicole Richie was spotted wearing them. No easy feat! We also wanted to secure a brand that had a strong identity but didn’t slap that identity on their jeans (ie - flashy labels and embellishment).

Enter April 77! We loved that the Paris-based line was inspired by the alternative music scene - specifically, indie, punk, skin and grunge. Whether you’re channeling Kurt Cobain or Kim Gordon, these jeans (and equally cool clothing) will expose your inner rocker.

Oh, and we thought the designer was way cute too.

Fashion Made Simple

RAG AND BONE FW09 New York 02-13-09RAG AND BONE FW09 New York 02-13-09It’s easy to put too much effort into looking effortless. Over thinking layers and contemplating accessory pairings can totally derail that simple plan to “throw” something  together without looking like you tried. Stylists and models have a knack for mixing and matching seemingly simple pieces to create a look that radiates major personal style. Sigh…it’s easy to forget that the former is a professional at getting dressed and the latter, well…most anything looks good draped on a 5′11 willowly frame.

For the rest of us, the brilliant solution is RAG & BONE. Season after season, they design sharp, versatile and uncomplicated collections…so you can get dressed better. The expert tailoring and thoughtful detail on every piece makes their clothing utterly wearable. They had me at “My thighs actually look good in these leggings!”

This fall, Les Nouvelles will be stocking the Rag & Bone essentials. From a clever coat with a detachable bottom to cozy sweater dresses and leggings galore… this is one of the few labels where rocking a head to toe look is totally okay and even encouraged. Formulas such as Rag & Bone leggings + Rag & Bone shirt dress + Rag & Bone vest will always = Effortless Chic. Fashion made simple.
